Ocular light exposure has important influences on human health and well-being through modulation of circadian rhythms sleep, as well neuroendocrine cognitive functions. Prevailing patterns do not optimally engage these actions for many individuals, but advances in our understanding the underpinning mechanisms emerging lighting technologies now present opportunities to adjust promote optimal physical mental performance. A newly developed, international standard provides a SI-compliant way quantifying influence intrinsically photosensitive, melanopsin-expressing, retinal neurons that mediate effects. The report recommendations lighting, based an expert scientific consensus expressed easily measured quantity (melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (melaponic EDI)) defined within this standard. are supported by detailed analysis sensitivity circadian, neuroendocrine, alerting responses ocular provide straightforward framework inform design practice.

At its best, human-centric lighting considers the visual and non-visual effects of light in support positive human outcomes. worst, it is a marketing phrase used to healthwash products or design solutions. There no doubt that environmental contributes health, but how might one practice given both credible potential implausible hype? Marketing literature filled with promises. Technical societies have summarized science not yet offered guidance. Meanwhile, designers are middle, attempting distinguish knowledge from which dubious make decisions affect people directly. This article intended to: (1) empower reader fundamental understandings ways affects health; (2) provide process for can dovetail decision-making already part designer's workflow.

Since the non-image-forming (NIF) effect of daylight on human circadian system is widely accepted, adequate exposure to now considered one elements a healthy life. This paper reports the results of a systematic review conducted on articles examining effects daytime electric light exposure alertness and higher cognitive functions. For this, we selected 59 quantitative research from 11 online databases. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020157603). showed that both short-wavelength dominant intensity white induced alertness. However, those influences depended factors like participants’ homeostatic sleep drive time day participants received exposure. relationship between functions not as straightforward alerting effect. optimal property for reported dependent other factors, such task complexity properties control light. Among studies exposure, ten (morning: 3; afternoon: 7) beneficial simple performances (reaction time), four 1) complex performances. Four performance nine 5; 4) performance. Short-wavelength effect did hold indicate need further to understand influence illuminance
