Abstract Resilience, the ability to adapt well adversity, is a critical factor in well-being and success of young individuals. This study explored multifaceted nature resilience among South African youth challenged by COVID-related stressors structural disadvantage. Specifically, this paper reports follow-up qualitative leg sequential mixed-method design. Thirty-eight adults (average age 24), all whom reported high risk exposure but low depression symptoms, took part semi-structured interviews learn more about their journey. Qualitative content analysis was employed identify prominent themes. The study’s findings emphasize dynamic resilience, with individuals being buoyed social network support (especially family); personal agency, support, resource combinations. contribute growing attention need for comprehensive policies programs that recognize enhance multisystemic sources enabling navigate challenges thrive transition into adulthood.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a major global stressor that has been associated with elevated risk of negative mental health symptoms. As helping profession, our main task should be identifying factors may shield individuals from the consequences stress, rather than only focusing on causes and symptoms stress. One such factor, identified in literature, an individual's perception their problem-solving skills. In this study we investigate role appraisal association between perceived stress psychological well-being. Participants were students (n = 322) who completed Problem Solving Inventory, Perceived Stress Scale, short forms trait scale State-Trait Anxiety Beck Hopelessness Scale. results demonstrate health-sustaining benefits appraisal, as all dimensions (problem-solving confidence, approach-avoidance style, control) directly hopelessness anxiety. stress-buffering respect to was demonstrated through interaction appraisal. However, did not buffer effects findings indicate important protective resource could beneficial for coping other events experiences beyond COVID-19. implications these interventions are discussed.

Researchers have paid limited attention to the role of adaptive cognitive appraisals in conferring resilience. In this study, we demonstrate influence positive problem-solving ability and social support on mental health outcomes. A random sample students at a university South Africa ( n = 322) participated study. They completed Perceived Stress Scale, Multidimensional Scale Social Support, Problem-Solving Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Satisfaction with Life Scale. Mediation analysis found that appraisal jointly separately mediated effects perceived stress hopelessness.
