Researchers illuminate the mental health plight of correctional workers by demonstrating a high prevalence disorders among group. Yet, structural barriers persist in preventing staff from accessing treatment and support—barriers that may result more prolonged pronounced symptoms. We consider perspectives on how policies at organizational level can foster better well-being outcomes for employees. Data are drawn open-ended survey responses provincial territorial employees ( N = 870) Canada. Responses collectively highlight need paradigm reflects sources stress workers, including access to specialized services easily accessible, immediately available, comprehensive nature. Introduction The inherent nature of work in correctional services can have negative effects on worker mental health and well-being. Methods current study, a replication, analyzes survey data collected from provincial territorial workers staffed six regions across Canada ( n = 192). Specifically, participants were asked at the end an extensive well-being open-ended question requesting any additional feedback or information. Results Four predominant themes identified data: (1) stigma pertaining to need recognize concerns within services; (2) idea that wear mind body; (3) for better relationships with support supervisors, upper management, ministerial leadership; (4) suggestions improve help sector realize its full potential maximize workplace health. Discussion We discuss implications these findings, emphasis finding ways promote positive organizational cultural change services.

In the course of their duties, correctional employees face exposure to a variety potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs). Recent research points an array consequences work experiences on psychological well-being staff, including development mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, general anxiety and major depressive disorder. Drawing open-ended survey response among provincial territorial (n = 269) in Canada, we consider who self-report anxiety, mood, or other with particular focus how are tied conditions occupational environments. Public safety personnel (PSP), including correctional officers, firefighters, paramedics, and police have higher rates of mental health conditions than other types workers. Much correctional work is generally misunderstood by the mainstream media and many public circles as solely punitive authoritative, which has fueled politicized outcomes for policy, practice intervention. Reasonably, critical criminological discourse steered primarily perspectives voices of prisoners victims. Yet this privileging leaves questions remaining about how workers in contemporary era negotiate their complex duties both prisoner care accountability. Abstract Correctional workers (CWs) endure several operational stressors (e.g., exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events) and organisational shift work, staff shortages), which are associated with positive screens for mental disorders self‐reports of suicidal behaviours thus urgently warrant further inquiry. The Canadian Provincial Territorial Worker Mental Health Well‐Being Study (CWMH) used an online survey collect data from correctional service organisations across all 13 provinces territories. This national study investigates among CWs diverse occupational roles provincial territorial jurisdictions ( n = 3740, 50.1% female). results estimated prevalence proportions self‐reported past‐year lifetime thoughts, planning, attempts the systems, exceptions planning in Alberta, Newfoundland Labrador, New Brunswick, Yukon where jurisdictional considerations requests precluded inclusion select questions. Substantial participants reported or ideation (i.e., 9.1%, 29.2%, respectively), 4.1%, 14.7%, 0.8%, 7.2%, respectively). Sociodemographic variables sex, age, marital status, total years service, category) were behaviours. Findings provide opportunities future research can inform tailored efforts by clinicians, providers, leaders support proactive interventions treatments, including supporting partners families CWs, fostering social networks, improving access timely health treatment.

Scholars and correctional officials have begun to recognize the association of work with occupational stressors that deteriorate mental health well-being. Yet, programs policies support prison staff as they navigate physical, emotional, psychological challenges are limited, scarce empirical evidence supporting their usefulness employees. We examine Advanced Mental Strength Conditioning (AMStrength) program using semi-structured interviews 70 officers after completed a year on job. Among our findings, we highlight 80% participants not used AMStrength since being training during recruitment. However, fulfills vital role in promoting awareness, including self-awareness health.
