Surface-anchored metal–organic frameworks (surMOFs) are crystalline, nanoporous, supramolecular materials mounted to substrates that have the potential for integration within device architectures relevant a variety of electronic, photonic, sensing, and gas storage applications. This research investigates thin film formation Cu-BDC (copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) MOF system on carboxylic acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer by alternating deposition solution-phase inorganic organic precursors. X-ray diffraction (XRD) atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization demonstrate crystalline films formed via Volmer–Weber growth. Changes in morphology as temperature increases seen AFM with more isolated nanorod-like crystallites observed at lower temperatures, while vertical nanoplatelet-like structures form higher temperatures. At 45 °C, nanoplatelets be composed fused nanorod segments aligned one direction. Ellipsometry confirms both increasing number cycles yield agreement infrared reflectance–absorbance spectroscopy (IRRAS) was further used characterize chemical binding orientation surface-bound nanostructures. In addition observing strong preferred nanostructures from enhancement symmetric carboxylate stretch absence antisymmetric stretch, IRRAS results show emergence new motif associated segmented nanoplatelet well high surface coverage after 12 cycles. From appearance this frequency peak alongside splitting BDC deformation modes, data support presence strained configuration accompanies AFM.
