The explorations as a part of the regional BiodiverSO Programme vegetable genetic resource rescue revealed that in arenili (sandy shores) “Salterns Margherita di Savoia” (SMS), coastal landscape area Puglia region (southern Italy), along commercial genotypes small rooting species, landraces are still cultivated. morpho-biometrical, nutritional and phytochemical properties two carrot (“Carota punta lunga” “Carota tonda”) hybrid (“Presto”) collected from SMS examined. study highlighted pedological conditions main driving force controlling nutraceutical characteristics carrot, conferring to grown this high profile comparison with literature data. In site cultivation arenili, large variability morpho-qualitative traits emerged among genotypes. tonda” stands for promising genotype being very rich phenols (209.8 mg kg−1 fw) (mainly di-caffeic acid derivative chlorogenic acid), ß-carotene (21,512 µg 100 g−1 fw), antioxidative proprieties. could be considered healthy product consumers also amenable selection breeding purpose. Increasing knowledge about local may push preference beyond community and, at same time, farmers can stimulated continue their cultivation. Thus, promotion on-farm/in situ conservation (cultivation) represent an efficient strategy agro-biodiversity preservation.

The development of an independent organic breeding and seed sector poses a significant challenge for agriculture in Europe. It should deliver cultivars suitable to the principles conditions farming secure integrity future product supply. This study seeks identify promising pathways address this by analyzing value chain organization. is based on mixed method approach combining assessment qualitative data from stakeholder dialogue with analysis quantitative farm survey data. The results show that partnership strategy distribute burden refinancing breeding, as whole would profit breeding. A cross-sector pool funding proposed joining forces among all partners invest collectively Four success factors have been identified: long-term commitment, fund cultivar development, awareness-raising importance high level transparency process. backed up findings market channels. Farmers who their products through long chains use less than those marketing short chains. highlights need better integrate such processors, traders, retailers, Regardless channel, farmers consider vital measure achieve higher use. indicates overcoming shortage more likely be achieved when also including activities.
