Childhood maltreatment is associated with mental health problems, but the extent to which this relationship causal remains unclear. To strengthen inference, authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of quasi-experimental studies examining between childhood problems.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may leave long-lasting neurobiological scars, increasing the risk of developing mental disorders in later life. However, no review has comprehensively integrated existing evidence across fields: hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, immune/inflammatory system, neuroimaging, and genetics/epigenetics. We thus systematically reviewed previous meta-analyses towards an integrative account ACE-related alterations. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, a total 27 until October 2021 were identified. This found that individuals with ACEs possess blunted cortisol response to psychosocial stressors, low-grade inflammation evinced by increased C-reactive protein levels, exaggerated amygdalar emotionally negative information, diminished hippocampal gray matter volume. Importantly, these alterations consistently observed those without psychiatric diagnosis. These findings discussed schematic model Future longitudinal research based on multidisciplinary approach is imperative disorders' prevention treatment.

Abstract Structural similarity is a growing focus for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of connectomes. Here we propose Morphometric INverse Divergence (MIND), new method to estimate within-subject between cortical areas based on the divergence their multivariate distributions multiple MRI features. Compared prior approach morphometric networks (MSNs) n > 11,000 scans spanning three human datasets and one macaque dataset, MIND were more reliable, consistent with cytoarchitectonics symmetry correlated tract-tracing measures axonal connectivity. derived from T1-weighted sensitive age-related changes than MSNs or by tractography diffusion-weighted MRI. Gene co-expression was strongly coupled tractography. network phenotypes also heritable, especially edges structurally differentiated areas. analysis provides biologically validated lens connectomics using readily available data.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is linked to impairments in various domains of social functioning. Here, we argue that it critical identify factors underlie impaired functioning as well processes mediate the beneficial health effects positive relationships individuals exposed CM. Key research recommendations are presented, focusing on: (1) identifying attachment-related alterations specific inter- and intrapersonal (e.g., regulation closeness distance) problems broader lack perceived support) affected by CM; (2) internal current emotional state) external situational cultural factors, presence close others) modulate processes; (3) mechanisms explain intact Methodological include: assessing through interactive (close to) real-life assessments inside outside laboratory; adopting an interdisciplinary, lifespan perspective assess processes, using multi-method assessments; establishing global collaborations account for influences on enable replications across laboratories countries. The proposed line will contribute globally develop refine interventions prevent CM further relationships, which - likely buffering chronic stress corresponding allostatic load foster resilience improve mental physical health, thereby reducing personal suffering societal economic costs its consequences. Interventions targeting euthymia psychological well-being promising therapeutic concepts this context.
