Introduction Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are increasingly promoted as cost-effective, and environmentally friendly source of protein in animal nutrition. However, there is limited information about farmers' adoption rates the factors influencing their decisions Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This article assesses livestock actual potential BSFL determinants decisions. Methods In this paper, we used treatment effect framework approach on data collected from 1,885 fish, poultry, pig smallholder farmers five cities four West Central African countries, including Kinshasa Bukavu Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Accra Ghana, Bamako Mali, Niamey Niger. Results discussion The results show that 20 percent surveyed aware a feed, rate percent. analysis showed could quadruple if all were aware. result suggests successful awareness creation can boost BSFL, which currently stands at should target educated with access to group membership, credit, extension services, diversified income sources influence adopt feed.

Abstract Food security remains a pressing concern in the face of an increasing world population and environmental challenges. As climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity continue to impact agricultural productivity, traditional livestock farming faces limitations meeting growing global demand for meat dairy products. In this context, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have emerged as promising alternative sustainable food production. BSFL possess several advantages over conventional livestock, including their rapid growth, adaptability various organic waste substrates, low impact. Their bioconversion rate, ability transform into valuable products, final product optimization are key factors that enhance potential nutrient-rich protein source, fertilizer, biofuel. This review explores strategies rate improve end products derived from BSF treatment. It highlights benefits using other interventions underscores significance optimizing meet challenges sustainably. Despite prospects BSF-derived consumer acceptance regulatory hurdles remain critical aspects address realizing full market potential. The utilization source feed can contribute management, reduce pollution, issue environmentally responsible manner. However, there is need further research innovation ensure safety, quality, economic viability BSF-based both animal human consumption.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered a commercially viable solution for global organic waste problems. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility rearing BSFL on wide range low-value streams and its potential transform them into high-quality animal feed fertilizer. Six different origins were selected each tested in triplicate. Several parameters analysed: growth performance, reduction index (WRI), conversion efficiency (ECI) larval composition. Frass composition also analysed. Larvae reared fast food (FFW) had highest ECI WRI lowest values when pig manure slurry mixed with silage grass (PMLSG) slaughter (SW). protein content found mushroom stems (MS) although substrate content. Moreover, frass nutritional profile proportionally related substrate's profile: protein-rich (SW) resulted low-protein protein-poor frass. same true lipid In conclusion, showed that can be successfully affect chemical compositions.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a chemically and structurally heterogeneous family of molecules produced by large variety living organisms, whose expression is predominant in the sites most exposed to microbial invasion. One richest natural sources AMPs insects which, over course their very long evolutionary history, have adapted numerous different habitats developing powerful innate immune system that has allowed them survive but also assert themselves new environment. Recently, due increase antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, interest risen. In this work, we detected hemolymph Hermetia illucens (Diptera, Stratiomyidae) larvae, following infection with Escherichia coli (Gram negative) or Micrococcus flavus positive) from uninfected larvae. Peptide component, isolated via organic solvent precipitation, was analyzed microbiological techniques. Subsequent mass spectrometry analysis us specifically identify expressed basal condition differentially after challenge. We identified 33 all samples, which 13 stimulated Gram negative and/or positive mostly challenge could be responsible for more specific activity.
