Cyclodextrins (CDs) exhibit versatile self-assembly properties due to their hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, with applications such as drug delivery selective binding. While research on CD is extensive, limited studies have explored aggregation behavior, particularly in interactions small ionic guests. The present work investigates the structure of β-CD tetramers aggregated alkali metal chloride clusters using ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). results revealed that diverse structures emerge tetramer depending cluster size. Notably, doubly charged exhibits distinct trends specific numbers MCl for Na+ K+ ions. After initially adopting a bucket-wheel two internal cations, transforms into new isomer tetrahedral configuration upon addition. formation closely linked filling cavity volume interactions, which possibly compensate weakened hydrogen bonds between CDs. Theoretical calculations further support structures, showing well-matched collision cross-section (CCS) values compared experimental CCS values. This study highlights role potential templates, leading novel assemblies.
