Understanding movies and stories requires maintaining a high-level situation model that abstracts away from perceptual details to describe the location, characters, actions, causal relationships of currently unfolding event. These models are built not only information present in current narrative, but also prior knowledge about schematic event scripts, which typical sequences encountered throughout lifetime. We analyzed fMRI data 44 human subjects (male female) presented with 16 three-minute stories, consisting four events drawn two different scripts (eating at restaurant or going through airport). Aside this shared script structure, varied widely terms their characters storylines, were highly dissimilar formats (audiovisual clips spoken narration). One group was an intact temporal sequence, while separate control same scrambled order. Regions including posterior medial cortex, prefrontal cortex (mPFC), superior frontal gyrus exhibited patterns generalized across subjects, modalities. Patterns mPFC sensitive overall temporally evoking weaker representations. Episodic memories reflect a bound representation of multimodal features that can be reinstated with varying precision. Yet little is known about how brain networks involved in memory, including the hippocampus and posterior-medial (PM) anterior-temporal (AT) systems, interact to support quality content recollection. Participants learned color, spatial, emotion associations objects, later reconstructing visual using continuous color spectrum 360-degree panorama scenes. Behaviorally, dependencies memory were observed for gist but not precision event associations.
