Abstract
On
3
February
2023,
a
Norfolk
Southern
train
derailment
occurred
in
East
Palestine,
Ohio.
The
accident
and
subsequent
fire
resulted
the
emissions
of
large
amounts
hazardous
compounds
to
ambient
atmosphere
over
many
days.
We
used
precipitation
chemistry
measurements
routinely
collected
by
National
Atmospheric
Deposition
Program
(NADP)
estimate
spatial
extent
chemical
deposited
as
result
accident.
Our
revealed
areal
impact
from
Midwest
through
Northeast
likely
Canada,
perhaps
far
south
North
Carolina
(portions
16
states,
1.4
million
km
2
).
Observations
showed
expected
high
chloride
concentrations,
but
also
unexpectedly
pH
(basic)
exceptionally
elevated
levels
base
cations
exceeding
99th
percentiles
versus
historic
record.
These
results
were
consistent
with
meteorological
conditions
atmospheric
trajectories,
not
due
highly-concentrated
low
volume
samples
or
wildfires.
robust
NADP
network
clearly
show
that
impacts
larger
scale
scope
than
initial
predictions,
uplift
itself
entraining
pollutants
into
atmosphere.
