Critical Reviews in Toxicology, Journal Year: 2015, Volume and Issue: 45(8), P. 643 - 661

Published: May 6, 2015

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are widespread persistent anthropogenic contaminants that can accumulate in tissues of fish. The toxicity PCBs and their transformation products has been investigated for nearly 50 years, but there is a lack consensus regarding the effects these environmental on wild fish populations. objective this review to critically examine investigations evaluate publicly available databases evidence Biological activity limited small proportion PCB congeners [e.g., dioxin-like (DL-PCBs)] occurs at concentrations typically orders magnitude higher than levels detected Induction biomarkers consistent with exposure (e.g., induction cytochrome P450 monooxygenase system) evaluated frequently shown be induced from some environments, does not appear reports damage (i.e., effect) biomolecules oxidative injury) Numerous endocrine system dysfunction or other organ systems have conducted fish, collectively no Early life stage DL-PCBs occur reported embryos, results do support an association between decreased survival early stages Overall, appears little had any effect health

To evaluate the occurrence and sources of compounds capable feminizing fish in agriculturally impacted waterways Central Valley California, water samples were extracted subjected to chemical analyses as well vitro vivo measurements vitellogenin juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Among 16 sites sampled, 6 locations frequently exhibited elevated concentrations estrogenic substances with 17beta-estradiol equivalents up 242 ng/L 12 microg/kg vivo. The patterns activity varied among sites, two showing only vitro, vivo, both assays. Sequential elution solid-phase extraction (SPE) disks followed by bioassay-guided fractionation was used characterize from where observed bioassays. highest most nonpolar fractions (80-100% methanol eluent) Napa River, while Sacramento River Delta eluted 60% eluent. Quantitative SPE extracts additional HPLC GC-MS/MS LC-MS/MS indicated steroid hormones, alkylphenol polyethoxylates, herbicides that at least 1-3 orders magnitude below bioassay equivalent calculations. Given different properties compounds, it appears these surface waters is attributable multiple compounds. Further investigation needed identify causing determine potential impacts on feral fish.
