An unprecedented rate of construction has profoundly increased the risk scarcity natural resources and threatened ecosystem sustainability. To establish an effective sustainable development policy, it is imperative to promote use responsible production channels, including waste recycling. Reuse harbor dredged sediment commonly investigated as a valuable alternative non-renewable needed for construction. Sediment characterization decisive in valorization process, aiming identify potential recycling paths. Existing research efforts, however, have rarely case studies developing countries. Moreover, they tended focus on technical aspects, ignoring economic feasibility, which carries important implications. This paper fills this gap first by meticulously selecting laboratory tests within means available countries second conducting cost-benefit analysis. The port Safi, Morocco, was chosen implementation adopted approach. Results showed that sand readily reusable aggregate. Several applications are possible, most interesting one being concrete works, substitute conventional sand. While treatment washing dehydrating proved necessary, analysis confirmed profitability Hence, beneficial reuse material technically economically feasible.

Abstract Fifty million cubic meters of marine sediments are dredged each year in France order to maintain harbor activities and sustain the economy littoral territories. Because anthropogenic around harbors, can contain significant amounts chemical organic pollutants whose behavior during dredging must be addressed avoid releasing risks for humans environment. French regulations come govern management sediments, considering them “safe” possible dumped at sea or “contaminated” needed treated on land as waste. In recent years, new constraints have been pushed toward land. This is, however, challenging few channels proposed reuse elimination appears economically environmentally unsustainable. study provides an overview technical regulatory aspects related sediment aims identify discuss limits their valorization. Dredged mainly composed particles with heterogeneous grain size, some being known many applications such building materials growing media. However, several reasons put forward explain why these not reused when extracted from sediments. Several technical, socio-economic, obstacles low demand stimulated by government incentives a good framework. National could help streamline removing “waste” status creating regulated market sediment.
