Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are proprietary mixtures containing hydrocarbon surfactants and per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) that used to extinguish hydrocarbon-based fuel fires. There is limited information on in AFFFs AFFF-contaminated groundwater even though more abundant (5–10% w/w) than PFASs (0.9–1.5% AFFFs. Eight commercial manufactured between 1988 2012 10 groundwaters collected from near source zones of fire-fighter training areas were analyzed for suspect by liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A list a homologous series detection computational tool, enviMass, combined screen surfactants. Nine classes detected including octylphenol polyethoxylates, linear alcohol ethoxylates, ethoxylated cocoamines, alkyl ether sulfates, amido dipropionates, benzenesulfonates, polyethylene glycols. Of those, six also found along with diethanolamines betaines, which not the eight archived This indicates although aerobically biodegradable, likely persist due anaerobic aquifer conditions. To best our knowledge, this first screening groundwater.

Nonylphenol (NP) as an intermediate from anaerobic degradation of widely used nonionic surfactants occurs widespread in the environment. Partition behavior this toxic and endocrine-disrupting chemical between soil water was not examined until yet. The objective investigation to quantify sorption desorption 4-nonyl[14C]phenol a set 51 soils using batch equilibrium approach. Kinetic studies indicated apparent within 20 h. Sorption influenced by sorbate structure could be shown with branched linear 4-n-NP, respectively. Linear 4-n-NP behaves differently isomers 4-NP. tested five different initial concentrations resulted linearly fitted isotherms that provided calculation partition coefficients (KP). Desorption (KP-des) revealed hysteresis independent properties but decreasing NP concentrations. KP values were correlated organic carbon content yielding log KOC 3.97.

The use of recycled paper for the manufacture food contact materials is widespread, but very little known about presence potential contaminants in paper. purpose this study was to assess worst-case migration estrogenic active compounds using extracts household use. Twenty different brands kitchen rolls, nine which were made from and remainder virgin paper, obtained retail shops. Paper subjected (a) determination total activity by an vitro estrogen screen based on yeast cells stably transfected with human receptor α (b) chemical analysis quantification GC/MS, GC/FTIR/MS, GC/FID detection a variety compounds. A marked response observed extracts, seven two revealed that contained levels bisphenol ranging 0.6 24 mg/kg roll, whereas no or only negligible amounts. In contrast, 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-nonylphenols, di-n-butyl diisobutyl phthalate present varying degree both apparent preferable distribution between types. appeared be due partly preservative propyl paraben. Diisopropylnaphthalene, turned out weakly (EC50 = 53 μM), detected minor amounts most major part, 0.3 4.7 found Our findings rolls contain other xenoestrogens may apply types used packaging emphasize importance identifying general. These data indicate useful as purity indicator
