Abstract This review follows the research, development and clinical applications of photosensitizer 5,10,15,20‐tetra( m ‐hydroxyphenyl)chlorin ( THPC, temoporfin) in photodynamic (cancer) therapy (PDT) other medical applications. Temoporfin is active substance medicinal product Foscan® authorized EU for palliative treatment head neck cancer. Chemistry, biochemistry pharmacology, as well temoporfin are addressed, including extensive work that has been done on formulation liposomal formulations. Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a promising approach for the treatment of broad range diseases, including oncological and infectious diseases.
