Abstract In this WIP research paper, we will present a literature review and propose design to answer the question: How are metaphors used for epistemological boundary-making in engineering education (EER)? Metaphors help us understand our world. Like light shadows, every metaphor reveals conceals different aspects of phenomenon it describes. For example, discussing broadening participation efforts as pipelines, pathways, or ecosystems has implications policy practice. So, not only influence how but also respond it. They propose three "overarching strategies: I) identification ultimate causal explanation, from which phenomena could originate; II) progressive extension explicative capacity specific theories to other than those for was originally elaborated; III) building metatheoretical framework providing language map conceptual linkages among short theories". authors present these strategies as alternatives that would exclude each indicate they themselves do not agree on best way fight against fragmentation. As readers with experience developmental psychology development theory, we believe this separation is based static flaw: understood dynamically, may well be part general movement theoretical development.
