Involuntary autobiographical memories and their relation to other forms of spontaneous thoughts DOI Open Access

Involuntary autobiographical memories are of personal events that come to mind spontaneously—that is, with no conscious initiation the retrieval process. Such spontaneously arising were long ignored in cognitive psychology, which generally has focused on controlled and strategic forms remembering, studied laboratory settings. Recent evidence shows involuntary past highly frequent daily life, they represent a context-sensitive, associative way recollecting involves little executive control. They operate by constraints favour recent distinct feature overlap current situation, optimizes probability functional relevance ongoing situation. In addition adults, documented young children great apes may be an ontogenetic evolutionary forerunner events. Findings suggest intrusive observed clinically after traumatic should viewed as dysfunctional subclass otherwise memories. Because their constrained, situation-dependent automatic nature, form category spontaneous thought cannot equated wandering. This article is part theme issue ‘Offline perception: voluntary perceptual experiences without matching external stimulation’.

Content biases in three phases of cultural transmission: A review DOI Creative Commons

Published: Dec. 19, 2022

Abstract Cultural evolution theory proposes that information transmitted through social learning is not indiscriminately but instead biased by heuristics and mechanisms which increase the likelihood individuals will copy particular cultural traits based on their inherent properties (content biases) of models, or under circumstances (context biases). Recent research suggests content biases are as important, more than context in selection faithful transmission traits. Here, evidence for emotive, social, threat-related, stereotype consistent counterintuitive reviewed, focusing how these may operate across three phases transmission: choose-to-receive, encode-and-retrieve, choose-to-transmit. Support some primarily functioning attention memory, while others function to share with others, implications this wider discussed. Ultimately, a approach examining biases, greater engagement literature, required clear conclusions about mechanism potential differences transmission.

People often demonstrate better memory for animate concepts (e.g., lion and sailor) than inanimate hammer mountain). Researchers have attributed this effect to an adaptive mechanism that favours information relevant survival, including about living things. In the present experiment, we examined hypothesis people free-recall performance words because tend be associated with greater mental arousal words, a factor was not controlled in previous experiments on topic. To end, matched word lists (and several other factors), compared participants' two types. We were able replicate past findings of exceeds their but found no support possibility stems from differences between concepts, as maintained even when arousal. The results therefore indicate cannot explain effects animacy performance.

Abstract In recent years, society has been stunned by high‐profile cases in which adults allege they were sexually victimized childhood. A crucial issue these is how accurately remember the traumatic childhood experiences. this article, we examine predictors of accuracy adults’ long‐term memory for maltreatment and events related to experienced First, discuss negative or threatening information child may affect memory. Second, highlight methodological challenges inherent scientific inquiry. Third, describe findings from our longitudinal research on abuse subsequent involvement legal system. We conclude that, overall, greater impact experienced, more accurate later memory, although factors development, individual differences, interviews moderate effects trauma
