Only a few randomized dietary intervention studies that investigated the effects of lacto-ovo vegetarian diet (Vd) in clinically healthy omnivorous subjects are available. We randomly assigned to overweight omnivores with low-to-moderate cardiovascular risk profile low-calorie Vd compared Mediterranean (MD), each lasting 3 months, crossover design. The primary outcome was difference body weight, mass index, and fat changes between 2 groups. Secondary outcomes were differences circulating disease parameters groups. One hundred eighteen (mean age: 51.1 years, females: 78%) enrolled. total participation rate at end study 84.7%. No diets weight observed, as reported by similar significant reductions obtained both (-1.88 kg) MD (-1.77 kg). Similar results observed for index mass. In contrast, interventions low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin B12 levels. groups, terms end-of-diet values, recorded 9.10 mg/dL cholesterol (P=0.01), 12.70 triglycerides (P<0.01), 32.32 pg/mL (P<0.01). Finally, no found oxidative stress markers inflammatory cytokines, except interleukin-17, which improved only group.
