Abstract The ventrolateral prefrontal cortices (VLPFC) are crucial regions involved in voluntary emotion regulation. However, the lateralization of VLPFC downregulating negative emotions remains unclear; and whether causal role is generalizable to upregulating positive unexplored. This study used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) examine relationship between left/right social reappraisal. One hundred twenty participants were randomly assigned either active (left right groups, n = 40/40) or sham (vertex, 40) TMS groups. Participants instructed passively receive feedback use reappraisal strategies positively regulate their emotions. While subjective emotional rating showed that bilateral facilitated success, electrophysiological measure late potential (LPP) demonstrated a more critical on pain relief (decreased LPP amplitudes) reward magnification (enhanced amplitudes).
