The utilization of marine-based collagen is growing fast due to its unique properties in comparison with mammalian-based such as no risk transmitting diseases, a lack religious constraints, cost-effective process, low molecular weight, biocompatibility, and easy absorption by the human body. This article presents an overview recent studies from 2014 2020 conducted on extraction materials, particular fish by-products. structure, methods, characterization, biomedical applications are presented. More specifically, acetic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES) methods for marine isolation described compared. In addition, effect parameters (temperature, concentration, time, solid-to-liquid ratio) yield investigated. Moreover, biomaterials engineering therapeutic have been summarized.

During the processing of fishery resources, significant portion is either discarded or used to produce low-value fish meal and oil. However, rich source valuable proteins such as collagen, vitamins, minerals, other bioactive compounds. Collagen a vital protein in living body component fibrous structural extracellular matrix, connective tissue building block bones, tendons, skin, hair, nails, cartilage joints. In recent years, use collagen an increasingly biomaterial has drawn considerable attention from biomedical researchers, owing its enhanced physicochemical properties, stability mechanical strength, biocompatibility biodegradability. This review focuses on summarizing growing role for applications. Similarly, advances various applications including wound healing, engineering regeneration, drug delivery, cell culture therapeutic applications, are discussed detail. These signify commercial importance fishing industry, food processors sector.

Fish collagen garnered significant academic and commercial focus in the last decades featuring prospective applications a variety of health-related industries, including food, medicine, pharmaceutics, cosmetics. Due to its distinct advantages over mammalian-based collagen, reduced zoonosis transmission risk, absence cultural-religious limitations, cost-effectiveness manufacturing process, superior bioavailability, use derived from fish wastes (i.e., skin, scales) quickly expanded. Moreover, by-products are low cost need minimize industry waste’s environmental impact paved way for discards development collagen-based products with remarkable added value. This review summarizes recent advances valorization extraction used several applications. Issues related processing characterization were presented. an overview most relevant food industry, nutraceutical, cosmetics, tissue engineering, packaging three years was introduced. Lastly, fish-collagen market open technological challenges reliable recovery exploitation this biopolymer discussed.

The processing of fishery resources results in the production a growing quantity byproducts, including heads, skins, viscera, intestines, frames, and fillet cutoffs. These byproducts are either wasted or utilized for low-value items fish oil. Typically, industries use only 25%, while remaining 75% is considered as waste by-products. This review presents comprehensive on extraction collagen from highlighting numerous techniques acid-soluble (ASC), enzyme-soluble (ESC), ultrasound extraction, deep eutectic solvent (DES) supercritical fluid (SFE). A detailed explanation various parameters such time, temperature, solid to liquid (S/L) ratio, solvent/pepsin concentration provided, which needs be optimize yield. Moreover, this extends its focus investigation applications biomedical sector, food cosmetics. explaining methods, parameters, diverse provides basis complete understanding potential fish-derived collagen. concludes with discussion current research perspective future development field.

Abstract The growing interest in valorizing industrial by-products has led researchers to focus on exploring different sources and optimizing collagen extraction conditions over the past decade. While bovine hide, cattle bones, pork, pig skins remain most abundant sources, there is a trend utilization of from non-mammalian species. This review explores alternative marine summarizes emerging trends recovery with particular environmentally friendly methods. Additionally, this covers colloidal structure-forming properties collagens, including foam, film, gel, emulsion formation. It also highlights potential important applications various food products. Based currently reported collagens extracted fish, jellyfish, sea cucumbers were found have highest yield mostly comprised type-I collagen, while crustaceans mollusks yielded lower percentages collagen. Traditional techniques isolate based acetic acid pepsin treatment, but they come drawbacks such as being time-consuming, causing sample destruction, using solvents. Conversely, conventional methods assisted ultrasonication resulted higher yields strengthened triple-stranded helical structures. Recently, an increasing number new been industry for biodegradable film-forming materials, colloid stabilizers, foaming agents, micro-encapsulating agents. Furthermore, modern foodstuff extensively used beverage, dairy, meat industries increase stability, consistency, elasticity Graphical abstract
