Inheritance of genomic DNA underlies the vast majority biological inheritance, yet it has been clear for decades that additional epigenetic information can be passed on to future generations. Here, we review major model systems transgenerational inheritance via germline in multicellular organisms. In addition surveying examples epivariation may arise stochastically or response unknown stimuli, also discuss induction heritable changes by genetic environmental perturbations. Mechanistically, increasingly well-understood molecular pathways responsible with a focus unusual features epigenome.
