Abstract Background While aging is a potent risk factor of dry eye disease, age-related gut dysbiosis associated with inflammation and chronic geriatric diseases. Emerging evidence have demonstrated that contributes to the pathophysiology or exacerbation ocular diseases including disease. However, relationship between aging-related changes in microbiota disease has not been elucidated. In this pilot study, we investigated association aging-dependent microbiome severity C57BL/6 male mice. Results Eight-week-old (8 W, n = 15), one-year-old (1Y, 10), two-year-old (2Y, 8) mice were used. Dry was assessed by corneal staining scores tear secretion. Bacterial genomic 16 s rRNA from feces analyzed. Main outcomes compositional differences among groups their correlation severity. aged (1Y 2Y), increased secretion decreased statistical significance. Gut α-diversity different groups. β-diversity significantly univariate analysis, phylum Firmicutes , Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria / Bacteroidetes ratio, genus Alistipes Bacteroides Prevotella Paraprevotella Helicobacter related After adjustment age, multivariate analysis revealed Proteobacteria Lactobacillus be Conclusions Our study suggests composition are signs

The eye is a metabolically active structure, constantly exposed to solar radiations making its structure vulnerable the high burden of reactive oxygen species (ROS), presenting many molecular interactions. biomolecular cascade modification caused especially in diseases ocular surface, cornea, conjunctiva, uvea, and lens. In fact, injury anterior segment takes origin from perturbation pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance leads increased oxidative damage, when first line antioxidant defence weakens with age. Furthermore, stress related mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA lipid peroxidation, protein modification, apoptosis, inflammation, which are involved disease progression such as dry eye, keratoconus, uveitis, cataract. different pathologies interconnected through various mechanisms diagnostics more relevant early stages. end point pathway release biomarkers offering potential predictive pathology. this review, we have analysed inflammatory processes front provide better understanding pathomechanism, importance for diagnosis diseases, recent treatment diseases.

Purpose: Contact lens (CL) dropout is likely a major factor contributing to the near stagnant growth in CL market. The purpose of this review summarize current state knowledge related frequency and factors associated with it. Methods: PubMed.gov was searched on or before March 22, 2020, terms "contact lens" "dropout" "cessation" "disruption" "discomfort". Pertinent articles were collected. references from these likewise identify additional relevant articles. Only manuscripts written English included. No study design date exclusions imposed review. Results: This literature found that frequent across developed countries, ranged between 12.0% 27.4% (pooled mean = 21.7%). top cited reason for established wearers discomfort, while vision neophyte wearers. If given chance, dropouts are often able successfully resume wear up 74% time. While mixed regard promoting dropout, meibomian gland dysfunction appears promote dropout. Conclusion: frequently encountered condition may be curtailed by early detection, patient education, alterative options, treatment underlying ocular surface diseases such as dysfunction. Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial syndrome that can be caused by alteration in the quality or quantity of precorneal tear film. It considered one most common ocular conditions leading patients to seek care. The current method for diagnostic evaluations and follow-up examinations DED combination clinical signs symptoms determined tests questionnaires, respectively. application powerful omics technologies has opened new avenues toward analysis subjects health disease. Metabolomics emerging complementary research discipline all modern comprehensive biological systems. identification distinct metabolites integrated metabolic profiles potentially inform clinicians at an early stage during monitoring progression, enhancing diagnosis, prognosis, choice therapy. In ophthalmology, metabolomics gained considerable attention over past decade but very limited such studies have been reported on DED. This paper aims review

Aim: The aim of the study was to demonstrate prevalence and risk factors dry eye symptoms (DES) among university students in Poland. Material methods: A cross-sectional survey conducted 312 Polish students. questionnaire consisted Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 5-Item Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5) questions regarding medical history factors. Results: According OSDI, more than half respondents (57.1%) have ocular surface disease. Time spent using electronic devices is correlated with scores gathered both OSDI DEQ-5 (p < 0.001). There a statistically significant dependence between psychotropics = 0.002), glucocorticosteroids usage 0.026), presence depression 0.001), diabetes 0.01) or allergy 0.008) proved questionnaires. Respondents refractive errors those living metropolitan areas higher symptom intensity(p 0.022). Stress felt by associated DES risk. No correlation smoking habits observed. The search included PubMed database and used keywords "Intense Pulsed Light Meibomian Gland Dysfunction". IPL is a new instrumental treatment modality MGD. This was originally developed use in dermatology later adopted ophthalmology therapy MGD can improve tear film stability, functionality, as well subjective feeling ocular dryness. However, reviewed literature, there great variability patient selection, evaluation criteria, protocols durations. Numerous studies report that effective safe procedure. There potential further improvements procedure, large comparative employing different modalities are lacking.

Given the expanding elderly population in United States and world, it is important to understand processes underlying both natural pathological age-related changes eye. Both anterior posterior segment of eye undergo biological, chemical, physical properties driven by oxidative stress. With advancing age, include dermatochalasis, blepharoptosis, thickening sclera, loss corneal endothelial cells, stiffening lens. Changes lowered viscoelasticity vitreous body, photoreceptor cell loss, drusen deposition at macula fovea. Age-related ocular pathologies including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration are largely mediated The prevalence these diseases expected increase coming years, highlighting need develop new therapies that address stress slow progression pathologies.
