Wood is a renewable, versatile material with multiple applications and the largest terrestrial pool of sequestered carbon. However, it susceptible to degradation, mainly caused by wood-decaying fungi. Since several traditional wood preservatives have been banned owing their detrimental effects on humans environment, extending lifespan products using new generation natural an imperative from perspectives human health environmental protection. Several compounds plant animal origin tested for fungicidal properties, including essential oils, tannins, extractives, alkaloids, propolis or chitosan; enormous potential in protection has shown. Although they are not free limitations, methods overcome drawbacks enhance bioactivity already exist, such as co-impregnation different polymers, cross-linkers, metal chelators antioxidants. The presence discrepancies between laboratory tests field performance, well legislation-related problems resulting lack standards defining quality performance protective formulations, however, create urgent need further thorough research arrangements. collaboration other industries interested utilisation active will reduce associated costs, thus, facilitate successful implementation alternative antifungal agents.
