Cyanobacteria commonly form large blooms in waterbodies; they can produce cyanotoxins, with toxic effects on humans and animals, volatile compounds, causing bad tastes odors (T&O) at naturally occurring low concentrations. Notwithstanding the amount of literature either cyanotoxins or T&O, no review has focused them same time. The present critically evaluates recent T&O compounds (geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol, β-ionone β-cyclocitral) to identify research gaps harmful exposure animals both metabolite classes. production be due common different cyanobacterial species/strains, additional possibility by non-cyanobacterial species. few environmental studies co-occurrence these two groups metabolites are not sufficient understand if how co-vary, influence each other, perhaps stimulating cyanotoxin production. Therefore, T&Os cannot reliably serve as early warning surrogates for cyanotoxins. scarce data toxicity seem indicate a health risk (but inhalation β-cyclocitral deserves more study). However, available combined mixtures combinations compounds; therefore, whether is issue remains an open question.

Increasing evidence from experimental research suggests that exposure to microcystins (MCs) may induce lipid metabolism disorder. However, population-based epidemiological studies of the association between MCs and risk dyslipidemia are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study involving 720 participants in Hunan Province, China, evaluated effects on blood lipids. After adjusting related metals, used binary logistic regression multiple linear models examine associations among serum concentration, lipids (triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) low-density (LDL-C)). Moreover, additive model was explore interaction metals. Compared lowest quartile exposure, [odds ratios (OR) = 2.27, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.46, 3.53] hyperTG (OR 3.01, CI: 1.79, 5.05) highest significantly increased, showed dose-response relationships. were positively associated with TG level (percent change, 9.43%; 3.53%, 15.67%) negatively HDL-C -3.53%; -5.70%, -2.10%). In addition, an antagonistic effect Zn also reported [relative excess due (RERI) -1.81 (95% -3.56, -0.05)], attributable proportion reduced antagonism these two exposures 83% -1.66, -0.005). Our first indicated is independent factor for manner.

The cyanobacterial blooms produced by eutrophic water bodies have become a serious environmental issue around the world. After cellular lysing or algaecide treatment, microcystins (MCs), which are regarded as most frequently encountered toxins in fresh water, released into water. Among all variants of MCs, MC-LR has been widely studied due to its severe hepatotoxicity. Since 1992, various studies identified important roles origin and progression primary liver cancers (PLCs), although few reviews focused on it. Therefore, this review aims summarize major achievements shortcomings observed past years. Based available literature, mechanisms how induces promotes PLCs elucidated review. This enhance our understanding role that plays provides rational approach for future applications.

Gut microbes play a critical role in helping hosts adapt to external environmental changes and are becoming an important phenotype for evaluating the response of aquatic animals stresses. However, few studies have reported that gut after exposure gastropods bloom-forming cyanobacteria toxins. In this study, we investigated pattern potential intestinal flora freshwater gastropod Bellamya aeruginosa when exposed toxic non-toxic strains Microcystis aeruginosa, respectively. Results showed composition toxin-producing group (T group) changed significantly over time. The concentration microcystins (MCs) hepatopancreas tissue decreased from 2.41 ± 0.12 on day 7 1.43 0.10 μg·g−1 dry weight 14 T group. abundance cellulase-producing bacteria (Acinetobacter) was higher (NT than 14, whereas relative MC-degrading (Pseudomonas Ralstonia) NT 14. addition, co-occurrence networks were more complex at Some genera identified as key nodes, such Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Ralstonia, different patterns variation network. Network nodes clustered Acinetobacter increased interactions between Pseudomonas Ralstonia other almost positive correlations D7T negative D14T These results suggested these not only ability improve host resistance cyanobacterial stress by themselves, but they can also further assist adaptation regulating interaction within community. This study provides useful information understanding reveals underlying tolerance mechanisms B. cyanobacteria.
