The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a critical role in the generation and regulation of emotion. However, we lack an integrative framework for understanding how different emotion-related functions are organized across entire expanse PFC, as prior reviews have generally focused on specific emotional processes (e.g., decision making) or anatomical regions orbitofrontal cortex). Additionally, psychological theories neuroscientific investigations proceeded largely independently because common framework. Here, provide comprehensive review functional neuroimaging, electrophysiological, lesion, structural connectivity studies 8 subregions spanning PFC. We introduce appraisal-by-content model, which provides new integrating diverse range empirical findings. Within this framework, appraisal serves unifying principle PFC's emotion, while relative content-specialization differentiating each subregion. A synthesis data from affective, social, cognitive neuroscience suggests that PFC preferentially involved assigning value to types inputs: exteroceptive sensations, episodic memories imagined future events, viscero-sensory signals, viscero-motor actions, others' mental states intentions), self-related information, ongoing emotions. discuss implications emotion regulation, value-based making, salience, refining theoretical models This unified generates hypotheses about mechanisms underlying adaptive maladaptive functioning. Intrinsic connectivity, measured using resting-state fMRI, has emerged as a fundamental tool in the study of human brain. However, due to practical limitations, many studies do not collect enough data generate reliable measures intrinsic connectivity necessary for studying individual differences. Here we present general functional (GFC) method leveraging shared features across and task fMRI demonstrate Human Connectome Project Dunedin Study that GFC offers better test-retest reliability than estimated from same amount alone. Furthermore, at equivalent scan lengths, displayed higher estimates heritability connectivity. We also found predictions cognitive ability generalized datasets, performing well or Collectively, our work suggests can improve existing datasets and, subsequently, opportunity identify meaningful correlates differences behavior. Given are often collected together, researchers immediately derive more through adoption rather solely data. Moreover, by capturing heritable variation represents novel endophenotype with broad applications clinical neuroscience biomarker discovery.

As the human brain develops, it increasingly supports coordinated control of neural activity. The mechanism by which white matter evolves to support this coordination is not well understood. We use a network representation diffusion imaging data from 882 youth ages 8 22 show that connectivity becomes optimized for diverse range predicted dynamics in development. Notably, stable controllers subcortical areas are negatively related cognitive performance. Investigating structural mechanisms supporting these changes, we simulate evolution with set growth rules. find all networks structured manner highly control, distinct child versus older youth. demonstrate our results cannot be simply explained changes modularity. This work reveals possible development preferentially optimizes dynamic over static architecture.
