A member of the Verbenaceae family, Aloysia citrodora, or lemon verbena, is a medicinal herb with antioxidant compounds. The aim this study was to develop green, optimized method for bioactive compound (carotenoids, ascorbic acid, and polyphenols) extraction from verbena leaves through response surface methodology (RSM). recovery shown be significantly affected by technique (both pulsed electric field ultrasound-assisted extraction), along an solvent, based on partial least squares analysis. Consequently, maximum polyphenol yield required double-assisted relatively low duration (60 min) at high temperature (80 °C), moderate-polarity solvent (50% v/v ethanol). With method, total content (TPC) measured 175.03 mg gallic acid equivalents/g, whereas chromatographic analysis revealed that verbascoside most prevalent (132.61 mg/g). optimum extract provided capacity measurements FRAP (1462.17 μmol equivalents (AAE)/g), DPPH (1108.91 AAE/g), H2O2 (1662.93 AAE/g). Total carotenoids were 499.61 μg/g, 8.36 μg/g. Correlation analyses negative correlation latter color coordinates. This highlights potential used in pharmaceutical food industries.

Nature has generously offered a wide range of herbs (e.g., thyme, oregano, rosemary, sage, mint, basil) rich in many polyphenols and other phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant biochemical properties. This paper focuses on several natural occurring acids (caffeic, carnosic, ferulic, gallic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, vanillic) first gives an overview their most common plant sources. A summary the recently reported activities o/w emulsions is also provided as vitro lipid-based model system. Exploring interfacial activity could help to further elucidate potential health properties against oxidative stress conditions biological membranes (such lipoproteins). Finally, this review reports latest literature evidence concerning specific examined acids.

Published: Feb. 9, 2023

Oral antioxidant nanozymes bring great promise for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment. To efficiently eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS), various metal-based have been developed the treatment of IBD but their practical applications are seriously impaired by unstable ROS-eliminating properties and potential metal ion leakage in digestive tract. Here, authors first time propose metal-free melanin (MeNPs) with excellent gastrointestinal stability biocompatibility as a favorable therapy strategy IBD. Moreover, MeNPs extremely natural long-lasting characteristics targeting lesions. In view dominant role ROS IBD, further reveal that oral administration can greatly alleviate six major pathological features IBD: oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum apoptosis, inflammation, gut barrier disruption, dysbiosis. Overall, this highlights clinical application prospects via harnessing scavenging at lesions, offering paradigm nanozyme or other diseases.
